It will be extremely satisfying to be able to enjoy your dental implants at the end of your treatment, but before you can reach that finish line, you’ll have to placement surgery to secure the implants. You might be – correctly – thinking that that’s kind of a big deal! Is there anything you should do to prepare for this appointment?

First – you can be rest assured that you’ll be in the hands of a skilled and qualified dentist. Second – there is! Keeping reading for a list of helpful pre-op tips.

Keep Your Mouth Clean

Your oral health’s number one enemy is bacteria build up, and that goes for your future dental implants as well. If you don’t keep your mouth clean with regular brushing and flossing, you increase your risk of developing conditions that could complicate your dental implants’ success, such as gum disease or infection. Brush twice a day and floss at least once per day so the odds will be on your side.

Fill Your Stomach – And Your Pantry

Unless your dentist says otherwise, it’s a good idea to eat a hearty breakfast before your placement. Once they’re anchored to your jawbone, you’ll have to stick to a soft food diet for three to six months!

This is also why it’s a good idea to make sure your pantry and fridge are well-stocked with items that you can eat after surgery. That way you can go straight home without having to worry about groceries or meal planning.

Plan on Getting Plenty of Rest

Technically speaking, you could continue about your normal routine after your dental implants are placed. However, it would be better to take the day off and plan to get plenty of rest instead! For one thing, getting enough rest is vital for promoting the healing process. For another, you’ll likely be sore. You could tough it out – or you could simply take your body’s advice and relax for at least 24 hours.

Follow Your Dentist’s Instructions

Finally, follow any instructions that your dentist gives you for your pre-op. Every patient is different, so you may need to take different steps to make sure you’re well prepared. If you have any questions or need clarification, be sure to ask your dentist for more details. They’re your treatment guide, after all! They’ll gladly help you feel as ready as possible for your dental implant surgery.
